Mango is the highest produced crop in the Philippines along with many of the neighboring countries. Half a million metric tons of mango waste are produced each year, this includes the pit, the peel and fibrous parts. Furthermore, the discarded mangoes, the ones that "don't look good" are also a major waste source. However, government and individuals are finding new ways everyday to repurpose this types of waste
Second Life by suMphat Gallery
Second Life addresses the management of waste from mango processing industries in the region. They grant waste a new purpose while fostering sustainable development. The team, formed by researchers from Khon Kaen University, Mahidol University, and Chulalongkorn University along with suMphat Gallery, from Bangkok have developed a new waste derived material known as mango bio-leather, which utilizes mango pulps and bacteria, and retains the distinct characteristics of the fruit without the need for polymer additives.
Seeds of success
“Seeds of Success: The Philippine Mango Flour Innovation Project” is a story of collaboration between the government, academe and the private sector to generate income opportunities and decent jobs for Filipinos by commercializing viable bi-products from mango wastes such as seed, peel, and kernel." as stated by the Government of the Philippines.
Mango flour is now an export product and is used for the production of healthy food bars and pastries for the health-conscious customers. Mango flour is used as a substitute for other flour.
